Koh Samui Climate & Weather
Generally speaking, Koh Samui has 3 different seasons; Low, High and Peak.
Low Season is considered by many to be from May through July and again September to mid-December.
- May through July usually have good weather, but the days are quite hot.
- September to Mid-December is considered the Monsoon season, which is usually very wet (not dangerous) and it
- can be hard to get a tan. On the other hand, this sometimes is a gorgeous time to be in Samui when the weather is good – and here in the tropics – unpredictability is the rule.
High Season is considered by many to be between Mid-January through April and again August through September.
- At some resorts, High Season can include December through April.
- The weather is tropical and warm, the surrounding waters are calm. The holiday/New Year time is THE busiest time on Samui as most resorts are full and ALL the tours are packed.
- April 13th-15th is the Thai New Year (Songkran) and is a VERY WET festival as water is poured over each other in celebration of the New Year. Be prepared for full tours and full resorts. This lasts 1 week before Songkran and a few days after, then Koh Samui is just right.
- August through September is a little warmer, but is right before school starts again for many families and therefore very popular for a holiday. As monsoon season closes in, beginning sometimes in October, the weather varies greatly.
Peak Season is considered by many to be between Mid-December to Mid-January and at some private villas the month of August.
- Christmas and New Year are very popular times on Samui. Resorts are fully packed and there are a couple of compulsory dinners you are required to attend (even if you don’t actually attend). The tours are fully booked and the island can feel crowded – unless you opt for a private villa or book-out a small boutique resort for you and your wedding party.
