Directions to Legally Register Your Marriage in The Kingdom of Thailand on Your Own
Legalizing your marriage in Thailand can be difficult. Here is a simple do-it-yourself guide for most foreigners wishing to legally marry another foreigner in The Kingdom of Thailand.
We strongly recommend you check your country’s requirements to ensure you bring all necessary documents with you.
- Plan to start your day by arriving at your embassy when it first opens. Make sure it is not a public holiday for your country – or a holiday in Thailand; the embassy WILL be closed.
- Fill out all necessary documents, show all necessary papers and proof of identity and pay embassy fee to certify documents. If either person has been married previously, proof of legal separation/divorce MUST be provided. There is an additional embassy fee for adding the proof of divorce documentation.
- Once all paperwork is correctly filled out and certified by your embassy, drop it off at a certified translator who will create the necessary Thai documents. But beware, some Bangkok translators are not legitimate and that will nullify any legal marriage you may think had.
- Next day (Again, make sure there are no Thai holidays or Weekends), pick-up official translated documents and take them to the Foreign Affairs

- After the legal papers are signed by the “Amphur”, your new marriage certificate must be translated from Thai in English (or appropriate language) and for some countries;

- For others, you can simply register your marriage when you get back to your home country using your translated marriage certificate. Check your country's embassy website for all necessary requirements.
